When we hear the word fry we think of fried food. However there is a disease spreading the nation and it has nothing to do with food. “Don’t Fry Day” reminds us just how common skin cancer is getting and what things we can do to prevent it. On May 27, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention declares that day “Don’t Fry Day.” As the warm months are approaching everyone needs to take precautions when in the sun.
Skin Cancer Prevention Tips
There are many things we can do to prevent ourselves from getting skin cancer. There is a memorable saying by the American Cancer Society that goes Slip, Slop, Slap & Wrap! This stands for Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, and Wrap on sunglasses. These are the ways to protect yourself from the sun. If you can remember to do all of these when you are outside during the peak hours of sunlight, which are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you will be doing a good job of protecting yourself against the ultra violet rays. It is usually hard to remember to cover up before running out the door to join your friends and family in the outdoor fun. Many types of skin cancer are preventable. Help yourself stay safe with these tips before you leave for you next outdoor adventure.
How To Detect Skin Cancer
You should perform a self-check so if you do find signs of skin cancer, you can get early treatment. Catching skin cancer early makes it more treatable and less life threatening. The A, B, C, D, E warning signs of Melanoma are:
- Asymmetry: One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other.
- Border edges are irregular, raged notched or blurred.
- Color is not the same all over and might include areas of pink, red, white, or blue.
- Diameter is larger than 6 millimeters across, about ¼ the size of a pencil eraser, although melanoma has been known to be smaller than this in some cases.
- Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape and color.
